The Happiness of Stories

Since I've released my newest book A Game for Amy, I've realized two things: 1. it's terrifying to put yourself out there. To put everything you have into a project in the hopes of making it the best you can possibly make it and then handing it over to the public to judge, esp. with kids, they're the toughest critics. And 2. The reward in taking the risk is absolutely amazing.

Here are a couple of my favourite stories about my book:

One man returning home from work told me his son asked him to read him a story before bed. The Dad told his son to bring him 3 books; his son returned with one - my very own A Game for Amy, and asked his Dad to read it to him 3 times.

A co-worker of my Dad's came into his office, sat down in a chair and said "Rod, my son wants to play ringette. Your daughter's book is his favourite book. I have to read it to him every night. His favourite part is the 'stinky equipment."

I never thought my book would be such a hit with young boys, but I'm really glad it is since the story is really about finding your place and the fear we have trying to fit in.

My final experience came when a little girl brought me the book and asked me to sign it. She told me that it was like this book was written for her. That the whole story reflected her life. I saw myself in that little girl and I was so touched that my words could reach her.

I guess I just want to say thanks to everyone who has bought A Game for Amy. Those who have supported it, suggested it to others and maybe even fallen in love with it themselves. This book means so much to me, not only because it's my first as an author, but because ringette has been such a huge part of who I am and to see that same love and passion in the young players I've had the opportunity to meet is simply remarkable. I'm just so thankful to you all.
